It has a population of over 100,000 people.
The town is based in the crater of an extinct volcano- very exciting. Thus all the earth here is red. It is in a chain of mountains called the great dividing range. On one side is the beautiful view across the valley to the coast. On the other is the plateau called the Darling Downs. This area is rich agricultural land with crops, cattle and cotton production.
The university is well known- University of Southern Queensland.
There are lots of schools here as many country kids come here to board for their education.
Toowoomba is known as the garden city and is famous for its Carnival of Flowers every September. Unfortunately the drought of the last 15 years has made it difficult to have flourishing gardens. www.toowoombacarnivalofflowers.com.au
Every year the steam railway chugs up the mountain through Spring Bluff. The station is awash with flowers and everyone comes to wave to the train as it slows through the station.A cup of coffee and some pumpkin scones is a great way to enjoy the day www.totaltravel.com.au/travel/queensland/toowoomba/toowoomba/attractions/heritage/spring-bluff-railway

The indigenous people of this area used to come here and collect the nuts and celebrate with large corroborees ( dances) www.bunyamountains,com
